Employee Learning Incentives
One thing we do for our employees is maintain a library of high-quality learning materials. These are physical books, audio books, online resources, and membership to online tutorial sites. No matter what a given employee’s responsibilities are within the company, there’s a good chance we have resources available that can speak to their specific role.
But making these resources available isn’t enough. You also need to know when – and when not – to push your employees to take advantage of them.
To do this, we created our learning incentive program. We do not require that our employees take advantage of these materials, but we’ve created a system that gives them gentle encouragement. Each book read, or online course completed, awards the employee with a point value. 10 points nets them an iTunes gift card. 50 points is good for either a Chromebook or a 4-day weekend. You get the idea.
Our goals for this program are threefold:
- It gently encourages competition. Our employees are some of the least judgmental people you’ll ever meet, but it doesn’t mean they don’t want to look good in front of their peers.
- It offers a great return on investment. Maybe this is a rather clinical way to look at something that’s meant to be fun, but the truth is that buying a Chromebook for an employee who’s earned 50 points in the incentive program is a great investment on our part; those 50 points represent an employee who has far exceeded our already high expectations.
- It produces well-rounded employees. Not every employee resource is perfectly tailored to each and every position within the company. This means that employees are encouraged to seek out resources that may fall outside of their comfort zone or area of expertise. That’s a good thing.
